I will be analyzing the motivations of the characters from the movie Good Will Hunting.
Will Hunting
He was a young janitor, aged 20-21, working at MIT, as well as working on construction sites with his best friends, Chuckie, Billy, and Morgan. He was an orphan and had lived in several foster homes. He experienced physical abuse and maybe some other abuse when he was young. He taught himself math and had a talent for math. In the movie, he solved the math problem posted on the blackboard in the hallway of a MIT building. Professor Gerald Lambeau found him when he solved a second and more difficult math problem on the board. Lambeau supervised him for weekly math meetings and counseling sessions to help him avoid jail time. Lambeau also offered various job opportunities for Will to promote Will's success.
Dr. Sean Maguire
He was the counselor who worked with Will Hunter, a professor of psychology at Bunker Hill Community College, and the former college roommate of Professor Gerald Lambeau, a math professor at MIT, with whom Will collaborated on math projects. Maguire came from South Boston and shared this background with Will. Both of them have experienced physical abuse when they were young. He was happily married to his deceased wife, who died of cancer two years ago. He was satisfied with his own life and choices, even though in Lambeau's opinion, he could achieve more.
